Project Background
For this project, I was tasked with optimizing the equipment listing experience for Housecall Pro, a SaaS company for home service professionals.
Role:
Product Design Intern
Collaborators:
Product Manager, Senior Software Engineer, Product Designer
Duration:
4 months
The Process...
Research
User Journeys
Wireframes
Hi-Fi Mockups
Step 1 Research 🔎
I gathered data for an equipment listing feature at Housecall Pro by conducting user interviews with home service professionals and gathering insights from the support team via surveys that I created. User interviews provided qualitative insights into their pain points and needs, while surveys collected quantitative data on preferences and feature priorities. This comprehensive approach informed the development of the equipment listing feature.
Research Process
-
Recruit users
-
Create and deploy a survey for support staff
-
Sort findings with Product Manager and Product Designer to decide on features

User Issues ❌
-
Inability to create custom fields
-
Unable to transfer property items to a new owner(if a house has a new owner)
-
Unable to add notes to property items(feature existed but was difficult for users to locate and use)
Feature Changes ✅
-
Custom field feature
-
Property transfer feature
-
More intuitive notes feature
Step 2 User Journeys 🥾
To establish flows for each feature, I utilized user journeys. These journeys allowed me to map out the step-by-step experiences of users as they interacted with the features.
Considerations:
-
Have UX be consistent with others on the Housecall Pro platform
-
Add very lo-fi wires to each step in journey
-
Consider all user paths for each feature

After presenting the user journeys to my Product Manager and some fellow designers, I got some feedback about considering even more pain points. After iteration, it was time to create higher fidelity wireframes.
Step 3 Wireframes 📍
After establishing the user journeys, I developed more detailed wireframes to start developing the UX and UI elements.

After getting the UI/UX established for the features I was proposing, I began creating hi-fi mockups based on the wireframes.
Step 4 Hi-Fi Mockups 📍
Finally, I translated the wireframes into high-fidelity mockups. Utilizing the Housecall Pro components library expedited the design process and kept the UX consistent. Taking the skeletal structure provided by the wireframes, I refined the aesthetics and incorporated brand elements to create polished and visually appealing mockups.
Considerations:
-
Use HCP components
-
Stay consistent to HCP color palette

Results:
Product manager and stakeholders approved. Notes and customer transfer features effectively communicated to stakeholders and senior product members. The designs were ready for handoff to software engineers.
